Oink Oink (What It Do)

One of the Platonic factoids is the one about how pigs are the cleanest animal even though they play in mud and eat farm garbage. It strikes me that this is anti-Semitic, because the reason Jews don't eat pork is that pigs are filthy.

For reference here's a hilarious site called PIG PAGE - UNCLEAN MEAT, which according to the banner up top features "ARTICLES ABOUT UNCLEAN ANIMALS."

I'm 98% certain that the original reason Jews don't eat pork has nothing to do with "filthiness" in any literal sense. Pigs, along with camels and many other animals, are dubbed unclean in a ritual sense -- it's not like naked locusts, which the Bible explicitly permits Jews to eat, are any "cleaner" than pigs. The "canard" about the pig prohibition being grounded in health or hygiene concerns was invented in the Middle Ages or something by Jews who wanted a better reason for shit they did. But there is not a better reason. Pigs are dirty, but it's not like chickens aren't.

Still a factoid though. Actually, I hate to say this, but I think the rationalist "reading" of the kosher thing is a factoid too!

i thought it was because pigs are friendly, open-hearted creatures and not conniving, clannish ho--oh, nevermind.

i dress my locusts in doll clothes before i chomp them.
